Better Than: Drinking freshly squeezed OJ with Japanese Tourists.

The Review:

O-town is famed for being the primary residence of the world's most renowned mouse, and for spewing out annoyingly cutesy boy bands. So can anything remotely musically worthwhile come out of this tourist death trap town? The answer, it appears, is yes.

On Saturday night, two bands from Orlando's eclectic, burgeoning music scene took the stage in Lake Worth's speakeasy spot Propaganda. They made believers out of even the most cynical of the indie South Floridian lot.   

First on the bill was the quartet XOXO. For a band sharing a name with a women's clothing line, they sure didn't seem to put much thought into their civvies. Guitarist/vocalist Noah Kussack dressed in ripped jean shorts that appeared to date from 1985, and bassist Kyle Raker sported some serious flood runners. Hey, these guys are all about putting on a skippy good show rather than looking rock band chic -- kudos for that. The band proceeded to dish out some seriously chirpy tunes that were heavily reliant on their M-Audio keyboard. Throw in some chiming guitars and driving basslines, with just the right amount of ooh la las interjected, and you've got an infectious 30 minutes on your hands.

 

Well after 6 years (that feel like 20) we are playing our last shows next week on Thursday June 11th in Tampa @ New World and Friday June 12th in Orlando @ Redlight Redlight.

It seems like a lifetime ago when we started this experiment in music and after all these years we are feeling a change in our personal lives and our musical lives. One we feel is for the better and one that we need to do.

XOXO's song "The Dissociative Fugue" was the featured track on the June 4th edition of the comedy podcast "The Daily Purge"

The Daily Purge is a podcast based out of Chicago hosted by memoirist, J. Michael Haas and Rob Lindley, a highly respected Chicago actor and drunk. Both of these boys were proudly born and raised in the great state of Iowa. The Daily Purge combines the perfect blend of original short stories, new music from budding artists, and the best banter you’ll find… anywhere.

The Daily Purge is ranked in the Top 100 Comedy Podcasts on the iTunes Music Store and continues to gain notoriety within the podcast community.

Florida based rockers The Beauvilles rock. Catchy, I know, but seriously what more can you say about these dudes?  As I listened to them the other day, with each knob dial turn making it just a bit louder, I realized I should probably turn my stereo down for fear my anal retentive neighbors would come knocking on my door(again), and complain about the music being too loud.

We wont get into the tragedy of apartment living, but we will say this about The Beauvilles-I do not personally know these four dudes, but I think they are deranged(and we mean that in a good way) and determined to make rock and roll, pure to the very core  and the only way they know how; essentially lifting a middle finger at everyone while living every line and every power chord as if it were their last.

Amen to that, music, for the sake of making music and sharing it with the people. What a concept! More people should listen to The Beauvilles. Play The Beauvilles and give yourself a treat. But please do it for the band itself that has put so much of their soul into making this music, so play it really stinking loud. You will thank yourself. They have quite a few upcoming shows in Florida in June and July and hopefully these dudes will make their way to the left coast were we will be ready to welcome them with open arms!

For the record, I just wanted to play some Wii.

Local indie pop band XOXO have just recorded their debut EP, C’est la Vie, and after about a year of intensive name-building, playing every regional show they could get their hands into – not to mention this year’s South by Southwest Music Festival – it’s time I got to know them.

But I’ve been pummeled by a head cold for going on a week now and I could really use some fun, something that XOXO happen to specialize in. From their scattershot tour blogs hosted by Orlando Sentinel to the infuriatingly sunny rainbow beaming out from a guitar case on their album cover, to say nothing of their now-famously cute band name that translates to “hugs and kisses,” who better to shake me out of my funk? To make things even more impossibly exultant, perennially merry Jeff Ilgenfritz of Mumpsy produced C’est la Vie. And he just bought a Wii. “I’ve been totally downloading everything with Mario or Zelda/Link from the old consoles. Valhalla!” he boasts. That sounds perfect.

Instead, I’m sniffling my way toward Seven Sisters Coffeehouse on Mills on a muggy evening. XOXO singer Noah Kussack and bassist Kyle Raker sit out front to greet me. Apparently, the Seven Sisters are doing well enough in this economy to afford closing by midday. Wally’s is a block away, but they only take cash. For all their DIY attitude toward music, Kussack – who rode his motorcycle directly from his day job pimping cell phones – and oxford-and-tie admissions rep Raker are all plastic. We settle in at Will’s Pub across the street.
